Manchester United put on a dominant display to earn a comfortable 4-1 victory over Fenerbache in the UEFA Europa League.
Jose Mourinho’s men, who had come under criticism following several disappointing results, managed to score all four of their goals between the 31st and 48th minutes of the game.
With Wayne Rooney back in the team, United did not create much chances up until the Turkish side gave away two cheap penalties 15 minutes before the break.
French world record signing Paul Pogba smashed in after Simon Kjaer fouled Juan Mata, while Anthony Martial also converted following Sener Ozbayrakli’s push.
Pogba then guided a superb curling shot home from 20 yards as Jesse Lingard drilling home from similar distance to seal the game after the break.
The rest of the game was then played out in an exhibition atmosphere, but the most heartwarming moment of the night came six minutes from the end when Robin Van Persie scored Fenerbache’s consolation goal and raised his arm to acknowledge the Old Trafford crowd.
The Dutchman had been serenaded by specators throughout the night; his name was chanted as he walked out for kick-off, he was cheered as he came across to take Fenerbache’s corners and, after curling a long-range shot just wide, he turned in Emmanuel Emenike’s cross to prompt an ovation from his former fans.
It was also worth noting the way the crowd showed their appreciation for Rooney, who was starting for the first time in five matches.
