Liverpool takes away goal advantage at Dortmund

Liverpool would hold on to an away goal advantage against Borussia Dortmund as Divock Origi scores the opening goal, which ended the game in a 1-1 draw.

In Westfalenstadion, Jurgen Klopp received a “respectful” applause from the stadium on a return to his former club. He gave a polite wave to the Yellow Wall, and watched as Daniel Sturridge trained among the substitutes after a lacking performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

It is natural that when you consider that Tottenham, a team eliminated by Dortmund from the Europa League, would give Liverpool a hard time, Dortmund, then would hold a huge advantage over the Reds.

But it was hardly so, as Thomas Tuchel would find himself indebted to his team’s keeper Roman Weidenfeller for limiting Liverpool’s score to just one. There were clear signs that Dortmund were being edgy, with loose passes and careless first touches indicating the distraction of Klopp’s return somehow got to them.

Alberto Moreno then made a cross headed on by James Milner, and Origi, who reacted quickly than every Dortmund defender, pounced on the ball. Making a run to into the box, he held off Lukasz Piszczek and slotted in a low shot to Weidenfeller’s right hand post.

Mats Hummels then headed in Dormund’s equalizer, only to have Liverpool muster a disciplined away display to keep them out for the rest of the game.

Incited, the visitors went in hunt for a winner too. Weidenfeller made excellent saves from Philippe Coutinho, Nathaniel Clyne and Coutinho again as Liverpool unnerved the German defence frequently.

Dortmund’s vulnerability at the back, now clear to everyone, offers further encouragement for Liverpool at Anfield next week, as does their growing maturity on the European stage.
